Seventh Top 25 Finish, Third Pole Position at King of the Hammers
DANVILLE, CA FEBRUARY 18, 2016 When King of the Hammers officially started in 2008, Jason Scherer knew that he absolutely wanted to be part of the event. His racing ability, will to succeed and continual innovating thoughts about 4×4 car technology have allowed him to start and finish in notable positions each year. This year in 2016, his 9th year racing King of the Hammers, Scherer started on the pole position and after having over 45 minutes of downtime in the pits managing an overheating issue, his #76 Rubicon Express Nitto Tire car finished second, 25 minutes behind Erik Miller and 28 minutes ahead of third place Raul Gomez. Earlier in the week, Jason was one of two drivers to bust the 2-minute mark in qualifying laying down a very clean and respectful 1:54.73 time for the pole position.
“I’ve driven home from the Hammers 9 times, and other than 2009 when I won, this is the only other time I have no regrets on what happened during race day. We did everything right and executed it perfectly with the circumstances we were given. We were battling overheating issues from a melted fan motor. It came down to making the call of changing the fans versus conservatively driving. We made the right choice to change them,” said Scherer. “The night before, I told my team at the team meeting, ‘I’ll never give up on you guys,’ so they never had time to think because they were always trying to get to the next pit in front of me. My team was amazing, I really couldn’t have been as successful without all of them.”
“I can’t say enough about Rubicon Express and the support that they have given me to be successful and competitive. The Nitto Tires obviously worked out as they hooked up and launched up the hills and through the rocks,” said Scherer. “It’s pretty cool to see that both the winner Erik Miller and myself didn’t stop to change a flat tire!”
While reflecting, stats always help define a situation. Jason Scherer has started 9 of the 10 King of the Hammers events as a driver or co-driver. Of those 9 races, he was crowned the King in 2009 and has finished 7 times in the top 25, with only 2 races not being able to finish due to mechanical issues. Scherer has had three pole positions in 2016, 2015 and 2013. He has finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and has also been very fast and consistent in the first lap of the race being the first car back through main pit in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2016, and notably the first car back through main pit that did Backdoor on the first lap in 2015. In Jason’s humor, adds, “I am also the only team, except for JR, that hasn’t won the King of the Hammers twice,” he says laughing.
Jason Scherer is planning on racing the Ultra4 Series this year and looking for the National Championship title. “My car is beat up from the race, it’s a hard race! Everything has to be gone through to get ready for the Stampede April 8th,” said Scherer the 2013 MetalCloak Stampede and 2012 and 2013 Nitto National Championship Race winner. “I’m excited to switch gears for the short course battles and desert races that make up the Ultra4 series and see if I can stay consistent to eearn the Championship,” said Scherer.
The car is prepped in Danville, California at Jason’s house with hours of assistance from friends and family. The Rage 4th crews are ready to support Jason in his efforts on Friday.
