DANVILLE, CA AUGUST 19, 2014 Jason Scherer’s race nemesis is the Ultra4 Discount Tire American Rocksports Challenge at Miller Motorsports race in Tooele, UT. Never being able to complete the race due to different mechanical difficulties, the Rage4th team is working overtime to prep the car for a finish. The job has been challenging, after meeting a concrete guardrail at 80mph while in 3rd place at the Ultra4 4WP Glen Helen Grandprix race, the significant damage to the new car has been challenging to get square. Also in that window, Jason Scherer took a Rubicon Express contest winner in his Jeep JK on the Rubicon Trail’s Jeepers Jamboree. “Since the start of building the car after the King of the Hammers to now, there really hasn’t been any downtime in accountability to get ready for a race. The whole team was hands on deck for getting the car ready for Glen Helen’s race, and now the amount of effort that they have put into fixing the car for the Miller Motorsports race is appreciated. This is a testament to Dan Trout too; fixing verses building is a whole different level of effort. When it is built everything lines up correctly, when you are fixing nothing lines up perfectly, but it ultimately has to,” said Jason Scherer.
Days before the Glen Helen race in July, the car was in pieces. Literally. The engine, to be most specific, was pulled down to the nuts and bolts, but with hours to go, and Jonathan Hainger, Zack Merrill and Phil Smith driving parts all night, the team built the car back into the well known #76 Rubicon Express Nitto Tires car. “I raced pretty conservatively, wanting to finish the race. The car did great with the different cam that we put in at the last minute, and the conservative racing got me up into the 3rd place position. As we approached the end of the race it was time to put some hard laps in and make some time on the leader. As I was passing a lapper, he was told I was coming and tried to get out of my way, but in doing so ended up actually leading me into some concrete blocks ending my day. It destroyed the front end, a lot worse than I had originally anticipated,” said Jason. With 15 laps of 20 completed, Jason Scherer placed 21st.
Breaking away from racing for a weekend, Jason and Rubicon Express teamed up to give a fan the opportunity of a lifetime to go on the Rubicon Trail for a fun filled Jeepers Jamboree weekend. The Winner? Dillon Oakes from Lincoln, Nebraska. “I drove a mile of the trail,” said Jason Scherer. “Then I asked Dillon if he wanted to drive and of course the answer was ‘YES!’, so he drove the entire way into the Rubicon Springs. He had never driven the trail before, and I can’t talk enough about how the Rubicon Express setup on the JK made it so simple for Dillon to roll through the whole trail. It was incredible how good it works that it makes my CJ sad,” laughed Jason.
The JK has gone through 2 modification levels to date and is currently undergoing it’s third. The first level was 35” Nitto Trail Grapplers with the 3.5” Extreme Duty Long Arm kit with a 4-link front and 3-link rear upgrade. “That set up was perfect for when we went to Moab earlier in the year, but now we needed more for the Rubicon Trail,” said Jason. The second level of modification to the JK was 37” Nitto Trail Grapplers with a Rubicon Express 4.5” Extreme Duty Long Arm kit and High Steer Kit that allowed Dillon to walk through the trail. Look for the JK to be in the Rubicon Express SEMA booth with the next transition including 40” Nitto Trail Grapplers and an all new suspension system being released by Rubicon Express.
“As we head out the door to Miller Motorsports Park for the final Trail Gear Western Regional series race, I have to again acknowledge the hard work that Chad, Brett, Ben, Ole and Dan Trout have put into getting the car ready. I truly couldn’t be successful on the track without all this support off the track,” finished Jason Scherer.
