King of the Valley in South Wales this Weekend
GLYN-NEATH, WALES JULY 24, 2012 King of the Valleys is a brand new event, inspired by the legendary Californian extreme off-road race King of the Hammers, and held with the full support of Ultra4 Racing. King of the Valley’s will be held 27-29th of July on Walter’s Arena, a 1,600-acre motorsports complex in a reclaimed coal mine in South Wales. “It’s been some 20 years in coming but a secluded Welsh hillside will soon reverberate to the sound of a special kind of punishment only big rocks can inflict on specially modified off-road vehicles,” explained event organizer for the All Wheel Drive Club, Neil Whitford. The King Of The Valleys it is the first and only European Qualifier for the 2013 King Of The Hammers.
Two days and four laps of an 18-mile course on at the Walters Arena motorsports complex will take the cars over a total of 80+ miles of fast rally tracks, rock crawls, mud, tight woodland tracks and rocky river beds, as Neil says, “a real mix of different terrains, which means it will be impossible to predict which type of car will be successful, assuming they survive the weekend”. It will be the toughest 4×4 endurance race the UK has seen.
The event has over 40 teams entered from all over the United Kingdom and Europe. As the first event, entry has been on a first come first served basis but future KoV’s will likely feature some form of qualification. A Last Chance Qualifier will take place on the Friday evening before the main event, made possible by Devon 4×4, replicating the popular feature of the American event.
Like the Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Park in the United States, it will be free to spectators, although maybe with more rain than the Californian desert. Nevertheless, not one to miss! The event takes place over the 27-29th of July, at Walters Arena, Glyn-Neath, Wales.
